living yurts
Our all weather yurts are based on the traditional Mongolian
Ger form with straight roof poles and curved lattice walls. The
cover is sewn into a single piece using the highest quality,
breathable polycotton canvas and all weather thread. The
cover is stablized from inside and therefore no external tie
down ropes or extra covers are required. This gives a clean
appearance and when installed and maintained correctly will
keep the cover dry and prevent discoloring. Insulation is
provided by wool in the roof, walls and floor. An inner lining of
unbleached muslin cotton gives a pleasant finish to the inside of the yurt.  The frame and floor is
built from ash wood protected with natural oils. Ash has excellent strength and flexibility. This is
perfect for yurts which require flexibility in their connections between ring, roof poles and frame
in response to the forces of gravity and wind. The insulated floor layer floats on top of a wood
platform built of poplar and pine. The upper and lower floor layers are divided by a layer of
flax. This method of floor construction makes the floor very quiet and stable. The door and
frame is made of massive Douglas-fir or Larch with the lower frame section made from oak.
The upper dome is made of two layer acrylic.

The dome is brings light from above. It is made of two layers of acrylic. It fits
over the 110 cm yurt ring. Three and four layer domes are available on special
order.  Larger domes are also available on special order but require resizing
the yurt ring and poles.
The door is made of massive Douglas-fir and oak with insulated glass. It is
treated on the inside with natural oils and on the outside with weather
protective paint. The frame and door are fitted using mortise and tenon
joinery. A curved hood is attached to the top of the door to redirect rain.

The bottom part of the frame is made of oak and is connected directly to
massive beams in the floor for stability and long life.
The cover is clamped into the door using wood slates on left and right.
The roof poles are directly connected to the top back of the door.
The door opens inwardly to avoid wind
The door is further stablized by mounting it on top of the floor using a strip of
oak.
The floor is constructed in two parts. The lower floor is double tongue and
groove poplar boards on pine beams. The exposed part of the wood is
treated with weather resistant natural oils.
The upper layer floats on top of the lower layer with a layer of flax for noise
and vibration reduction. Dowel inserts keep the upper layer from sliding off.
The upper layer is made of pine, wool and ash floor boards.
The foundation and platform is built up as shown in the photo album. A circle is first
measured, the grass is mown, drainage is installed and tested, foundation stones are
positioned, the two layers are installed.
Title
Cotton - Unbleached muslin quality cotton is used in the inner liner. It has a light beige
color and gives a soft calming feeling to the interior.
Canvas is water and rot proofed. We do not offer fire proofed canvas because
it is toxic. We offer standard 400 gram brilliant white canvas. Heavier
700 gram is available in brilliant white and tan on special order.
materials
We take special care in selecting all materials to ensure that they are non-toxic inside
the yurt.
Wool is washed to between .5 and .8 percent lanolin.
This ensures a clean smell. Wool felt is 1cm thick and is bound together with
fine fibers of non-toxic polyethylene for strength. Pure, unwashed felt
develops a strong smell and quickly falls apart.  The wool pillow is
3 to 5 cm thick and is a combination of thin wool felt and air filled wool layers.
The roof and wall fabrics are sewn using very strong, high quality, bonded,
UV and rot resistant thread. The cotton inner liner is sewn with cotton thread.
The wall fabrics are layered with canvas cover, wool and cotton. The
canvas/wool combination is fire resistant without use of chemicals. A
minimum of three layers of felt are recommended for winter.

Wood is purchased directly from the saw mill. It contains no chemical or
pressure treatment. We use ash, poplar, Douglas-fir  and oak.
Natural plant oils are used to treat the wood in the yurt frame, inner door and
underneath the floor.
We use the traditional ger frame which is a wonder of stability. The
weight of the frame, fabrics and snow during winter is evenly
distributed across the roof and frame into the floor. The lower
part of the wall is stablized by a wood rim in the floor. The upper
part of the wall is stablized by a nylon band.
